Toxoplasma gondii is unarguably one of the most successful intracellular pathogens of medical importance. This parasite multiplies within a unique parasitophorous vacuole that provides a balance between the parasite's anabolic needs and the subversion of host defenses. We demonstrate that Toxoplasma is able to craftily redirect host organelles to the parasitophorous vacuole in order to divert nutrients from them and/or to interfere with host immunity. Through the exploitation of host endocytic structures, the parasite gains access to diverse nutrients from host digestive compartments sequestered in the vacuole. The parasite hijacks the host microtubule-organizing center and maintains a tight association with this structure throughout the course of infection, which causes irreversible centrosomal defects. The ensuing alteration of the host microtubular network and fragmentation of the Golgi apparatus in infected cells lead to an arrest in host cell division and an impairment of secretion. Jointly these observations outline some virulence strategies developed by Toxoplasma to transform the extreme environment of a cell interior into a replication-permissive habitat.
