Neuropathology, Anatomical Pathology

The Division of Neuropathology provides clinical neuropathology services for Northwestern Memorial Hospital.  The Division of Neuropathology provides a wide range of diagnostic services, covering biopsies or resections from CNS tumors, infections, and epilepsy.  In addition, approximately 300 postmortem brains per year are accessioned.  The Division of Neuropathology provides didactic lectures for medical students, pathology residents, and rotating residents in neurology, pathology, and neurosurgery.  The division has funded research programs in Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, and developmental biology, and supports the Medical School Brain Bank.

Testing and Services

The Northwestern Neuropathology Program offers a full range of services in diagnostic neuropathology. Comprised of three board-certified neuropathologists at the Medical Center and one neuropathologist at Children Memorial Hospital, the program offers consultation or second-opinion services in surgical neuropathology. In addition, the program offers a Postmortem Neuropathology Service which can provide valuable information to families. Nerve and muscle biopsies are diagnosed through the Neuromuscular Disorders Program.
