Blood Bank, Clinical Pathology

The Blood Bank Division performs clinical testing, consultation, research, and teaching in the areas of blood banking, transfusion medicine, and hematopoietic stem cell processing.

Testing and Services

All three blood bank laboratories provide immunohematopathologytesting and blood components for transfusion therapy. Testing includes
  • ABO and Rh typing
  • Red cell antibody screening and identification
  • Antibody titration
  • Red cell crossmatching
  • Direct antiglobulin testing
  • Autoantibody testing in warm and cold autoimmune hemolytic anemia
  • Rh immune globulin evaluation
  • Transfusion reaction evaluation

Blood products provided include red blood cells, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate, and Rh immune globulin. Autologous (the patient's own blood) and directed (blood from family or friends) products can be arranged.

The Northwestern Memorial Hospital laboratory also provides hematopoietic stem cell processing for bone marrow transplants. Bone marrow cells or peripheral blood stem cells are separated, counted, concentrated, frozen, and prepared for infusion into the patient. Special selection procedures are done to purify early progenitor cells having the CD34 antigen.

Clinical Research

Current projects include
  • Transfusion problems in liver transplantation
  • Transfusion problems in bone marrow transplantation
  • Red cell alloimmunization
  • Lewis blood group system
  • Blood component recalls

Teaching

The blood bank division teaches transfusion medicine and blood banking to medical students, pathology residents, residents from other departments, hematology fellows, and clinical attending physicians. Continuing education is provided at regional, national, and international medical conferences. Division faculty members serve on transfusion medicine committees of national professional societies.
