Hemostasis, Clinical Pathology

The hemostasis laboratory and the division provide service to inpatients, outpatients, and outreach clients, and serve as a reference laboratory for other institutions in the Chicago area. Faculty and staff members conduct research and teach medical students and residents on topics related to bleeding and thrombosis.

Testing and Services

The laboratory provides full service from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday through Friday and from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Coagulation service with reduced menu is provided by the Rapid Response Laboratory during "off-hours."

Hemostasis Tests Offered

  • Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT)
  • Activated protein C resistance
  • Alpha2 plasmin inhibitor
  • Anticardiolipin antibodies
  • Antiphospholipid syndrome panel
  • Antithrombin III activity
  • Bleeding time
  • Circulating anticoagulant screening
  • Clot retraction
  • D-dimer assay, semiquantitative (latex agglutination)
  • Euglobulin clot lysis time
  • Factor assays, quantitative (Factors II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII)
  • Factor XIII assay, qualitative
  • Fibrinogen determination
  • Fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products (FDP), semiquantitative (latex agglutination)
  • Heparin-induced antiplaPhoneet antibody (plaPhoneet aggregation method)
  • Lupus anticoagulant panel
  • Plasminogen
  • PlaPhoneet aggregation
  • PlaPhoneet glassbead column retention
  • Protein C activity
  • Protein C antigen
  • Protein S activity
  • Protein S antigen
  • Prothrombin time (PT)
  • Ristocetin cofactor assay
  • Thrombin time
  • Thromboelastography

Clinical Research

Current Topics include

  • Performance characteristics of a synthetic APTT reagent
  • PT testing with low ISI recombinant reagents in liver disease
  • Heparin monitoring with a heparin-sensitive APTT reagent
  • Critical reappraisal for need of duplicate testing in PT/APTT assays

Teaching

Faculty and staff members teach medical and dental students, pathology residents and hematopathology fellows, and medical technology students.
