While not a formal requirement, research is an important component of the residency experience at Northwestern. Guaranteed funding and salary support for 18 months or more of dedicated research time is provided to trainees in the physician scientist training program (PSTP). For non-PSTP residents, funding for research is available through an internal grant review process where residents submit proposals under the supervision of faculty mentors. All residents receive 4 months of elective time during their residency. At the discretion of the resident and program director, some or all of this elective time can be used for research in a variety of settings, ranging from clinical to translational to basic science.
