Pediatric Pathology

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers extensive expertise and state-of-the-art technology that supports the breadth of clinical and research activities of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, as well as several satellite locations. Our mission is to provide the highest quality, most advanced services in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine while collaborating with staff, providers and scientists in delivering excellence in pediatric healthcare, research, education and advocacy. Our vision is to be nationally recognized for our expertise and leadership in anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine by delivering efficient, timely and high-quality services providing innovative approaches, advanced technology, research and development, education and training.

Education

The department offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship program designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic pediatric pathology, with an optional year to include research participation. We also provide training in pediatric pathology to residents in the Pathology residency program, as well as to residents in a number of other training programs throughout the Chicago area.

Research

Our highly specialized team participates broadly and collaboratively with investigators throughout Lurie Children’s. We are dedicated to team science. The department houses the infrastructure supporting the Lurie Children’s Biorepository, which collects, processes and disburses clinical samples for research use by Lurie Children’s investigators through the oversight of the Institutional Review Board.

Patient Care

Each of our faculty has subspecialty certification in their area of expertise. We maintain our certification by the College of American Pathologists through biennial inspections. Elizabeth J. Perlman, MD, is head of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and is board-certified in Anatomic Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.
