Pediatric Pathology

Pediatric Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers extensive expertise and state-of-the-art technology that supports the breadth of clinical and research activities of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, as well as several satellite locations.

Our mission is to provide the highest-quality, most advanced services in anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine while collaborating with staff, providers and scientists to deliver excellence in pediatric healthcare, research, education and advocacy. Our vision is to be nationally recognized for our expertise and leadership in anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine by delivering efficient, timely, high-quality services and providing innovative approaches, advanced technology, research and development, education and training.

Education

The department offers a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education–accredited fellowship program that provides comprehensive training in diagnostic pediatric pathology, with an optional year for research participation. We also train residents in pediatric pathology in the Pathology residency program, as well as residents in several other training programs throughout the Chicago area.

Research

Our highly specialized team participates broadly and collaboratively with investigators throughout Lurie Children's. We are dedicated to team science. The department houses the infrastructure supporting the Lurie Children's Biorepository, which collects, processes and disburses clinical samples for research used by Lurie Children's investigators with the oversight of the Institutional Review Board.

Patient Care

Each of our faculty has subspecialty certification in their area of expertise. We maintain our certification by the College of American Pathologists through biennial inspections.

Shannon Haymond, PhD, is head of Pediatric Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
